INTRODUCTION

As of 2019, one of the most globally known companies is Apple Inc. and their most popular accessory is the AirPod which made its market debut in late 2016. Three years after its release, the AirPods are considered to be one of the most popular demanded earphones on the market. Especially prominent in New York while on the MTA Subways, at least 85% of the people on the train are wearing these headphones. However, the AirPods have many flaws, mainly in regards to its design and that’s what The ABOG team plan to combat. AirPods are usually intended to fit only one type of ear; it is a product that says “one size fits most”. This is also true of other wireless earphones that have since debuted, trying to mimic the designs of Apple and they all have the same problem- set sizing. This type of design makes it so that these earphones are easy to lose or sometimes uncomfortable.

OVERVIEW

The purpose of the CLOUDS earphone is to up the game for wireless earphones. Tackling some of the main issues from the popular AirPods by Apple Inc. and making the impossible seem possible to provide a truly innovative design on the market.

KEY DESIGN ASPECTS

  1. Convenient Makeup: The small size makes it universal for everyone to use but doesn’t impact its usefulness. The material its made of is waterproof and durable so sustain wear and tear.
  2. Easy to Use and Minimalist: Magnetic properties make the earphones stay in place. There are no unnecessary parts and design makes it appealing to a wider market.

CLOUDS IN DEPT

The CLOUDS takes wireless headphones to the next level. One of the key components of the CLOUDS is its size and weight, paralleling that of the button cell battery, AG0. Approximately 5.8 millimeters in diameter and 2.1 millimeters in height and weighing 0.30 grams, these properties make it possible for it to comfortably reside within the outer parts of the user’s ear canal. The small earphones manage to stay in place by the magnetic properties of its make-up. The earphones are covered with stainless steel and then painted over with a layer of hypoallergenic graphene.

CLOUDS comes in two parts, one being the earphone itself, where all the wires and MESM magnetic field sensors are and the other being a small solid piece of graphene that keeps the earphone in place that remains on the outside of the ear. The magnetic properties of graphene are strong enough that they can hold the earphone in place no matter how thick someone’s ear may be. Once the magnets have been attracted with each other, they stay put, meaning that nothing would come into its interference. Therefore, people who may fear accidentally knocking the magnets apart by doing things like putting their hair behind their ears or wearing earrings do not have to worry. However, when it’s time to remove the magnet it’s also easy for the user- just remove the piece of graphene with ease. This design makes it so that people of all size ear canals can use CLOUDS and not worry about them being easily lost.

The final design of CLOUDS is one that has never been debuted in the market- surround sound. When introducing CLOUDS, it was mentioned that it only contained two parts, the earphone itself and then the solid piece of graphene, meaning that CLOUDS only resides in one ear. This doesn’t mean that there is only sound into one ear, by using a sound scene, the sound reflects off a surface and bounces around so that you can hear your music through the other ear without the need of a second earpiece part. The surface that the sound bounces off of is created by the MEMS magnetic field sensors and has a set diameter. This means that anyone outside of the close proximity of someone’s space cannot hear the music coming from CLOUDS.
